Apart from its fringing, this pelmet is carved entirely from pine wood.
It is part of a suite of seven wooden pelmets supplied by Thomas Chippendale Junior for the Gallery in the 1780s. They are the only known examples of pelmets with carved drapery made by the Chippendale firm in existence.
In the Victorian period the pelmets were painted blue and given full-length curtains.
