For over three decades, Harewood Contemporary has been at the forefront of showcasing groundbreaking contemporary art, providing a platform for some of the most exciting and thought-provoking artists of our time; including winners of prestigious awards such as the Turner Prize.

This commitment to contemporary art began with the creation of the Terrace Gallery in 1988 by artist and curator Diane Howse, Countess of Harewood.

Opening to the public in 1989, it was the first dedicated contemporary exhibition space within an English country house, pioneering an approach that many stately homes have since embraced.

Located in the Sub Hall on the south front of the House, the gallery hosted an evolving programme of exhibitions featuring artists at various stages of their careers, often engaging with Harewood’s historic collections, landscape and heritage.
