Saturday 3 August 2024
10.30am – 4.30pm

Join textile artist and owner of ocre natural dye studio, Kayleigh Davis for an exciting day exploring natural pigments to create your own naturally dyed silk scarf at Harewood House. This event is suitable for beginners and those who have some experience of natural dyes already.

What will the session involve?

The session will start off with an introduction into natural dyeing, and how pigments can be embedded into textiles. Kayleigh will then demonstrate a variety of natural dye techniques including; dip-dyeing, bundling, hammering and painting, with a selection of prepared natural dyes, plants and food waste to create amazing plant-based prints. You will then use these techniques to create your own beautiful naturally dyed silk scarf to be treasured for years to come.

Will I need to bring anything?

Everything you’ll need for this event will be provided.

To note: As we will be working with natural dyes, I would advise you wear something which you don’t mind getting a little bit mucky.

About Kayleigh Davis

Kayleigh Davis is a Yorkshire based textile artist and workshop facilitator whose practice focuses on naturally dyed silks. Immersed in nature from a young age, her work seeks to explore the impermanence and fragility of the natural world throughout the seasons by embedding foraged and grown pigments and prints into cloth. Her process is intrinsically meditative as she forages for seasonal botany around local woodlands and grows her own dye plants in a dedicated colour garden. Subsequently, the plants she embeds into her works are selected intuitively, often qualifying due to their ability, through form or colour to spark joy.
