Saturday 29 April 2023
10am – 4pm

Join us at Harewood for a workshop designed to provide you with an introduction to portrait painting, completed from a reference image with tuition and guidance along the way. Perfect for beginners and those who already have some experience with painting.

Over the course of the day you will learn to complete a portrait painting through the development of your observational drawing skills, your painting technique, and your understanding of colour and colour mixing.

This workshop will place a focus on the understanding of light and shadow, proportion, and form, bringing out our own individual expression along the way. While the tutor guides you through the philosophy of seeing as an artist and understanding the main fundamentals of portraiture through paint.

Luke Thompson is a representational painter, working with portraits, the figure, and still life. He works with traditional methods of oil painting and charcoal drawing, and looks to capture the narrative of nature as it is seen and experienced with a focus on light, shadow and form.’

Enjoy a working lunch from Harewood Food and Drink Project, included in your ticket.

You must provide your own materials for this workshop, including both a canvas and palette. Please see the material list in the pink box on the left hand side of the webpage.

Luke Thompson (b. 1993, Leeds) is a representational oil painter based in West Yorkshire.

Luke trained through studying the academic and traditional methods of drawing and painting, and developed his craft through working from life. During his initial training, he spent a period of time in Florence studying under the alumni of the Florence Academy of Art, where he gained an insight into the techniques and practice of the masters of the past.

Following his studies, Luke set up his studio and is now working professionally taking regular commissions, tutoring, and participating in exhibitions.
