This spectacular variety of bamboo is an improved form of the ‘Golden Fishpole bamboo’ from China. It produces the largest, fastest-growing culms of all the bamboos growing in the Himalayan Garden.
In the Far East, canes from the original species are used for walking sticks, umbrella handles and fishing rods.
The name of this variety: ‘Holochrysa’ translates as holo (= completely) + chrysa (= golden). This possibly relates to the fact that the culms are ‘all-yellow’ even in a shaded location, whereas the original species is said to be particularly sensitive to poor light conditions, and has green culms, which turn soft yellow only in strong light.
In full sun, this variety reliably produces culms of a rich yellow colour, which contrast very well with the attractive, green foliage.
