Over the summer holidays, Harewood has been alive with curiosity and exploration as more than 100 families and guests have joined us for our complimentary Minibeast Safari walks.
Together, we’ve swept nets through the grasses of Sun Sides, peered into observation pots and taken a closer look at the extraordinary life that thrives just beneath our feet.
Thanks to your time, effort and enthusiasm, we’ve built a fascinating picture of the meadow. Participants have recorded overwhelming numbers of damselflies and dragonflies skimming the air, frogs leaping through the grass, ladybirds resting on leaves and harvestmen stretching their spindly legs across the undergrowth. Each discovery has helped us understand more about the balance and vitality of Harewood’s landscapes.
These findings tell an important story. Dragonflies and damselflies are brilliant indicators of clean water and healthy wetland areas, while frogs rely on diverse habitats with good cover and moisture. Ladybirds are natural pest controllers, suggesting a thriving food chain and harvestmen flourish where there is plenty of insect life to support them. Taken together, these sightings show us that the Sun Sides meadows are rich, varied and in excellent health — a sign that conservation efforts are working and that biodiversity here is strong.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has taken part this summer. Your curiosity and care have not only made the Minibeast Safari a joy to run but also contributed to our understanding of the living landscape at Harewood. We look forward to welcoming you back soon for more opportunities to explore, discover & connect with nature.
