Following the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Princess Mary sent a Christmas gift to all personnel serving in the British forces.
Each brass gift box embossed with Mary’s profile contained a Christmas card and various presents tailored to the recipient, such as tobacco and cigarettes for smokers and stationary, chocolate, sweets or spices for non-smokers or those of different faiths.
By the end of the war, over 2.5 million boxes had been distributed.
