Discover the surprising world of fungi and the hidden challenges they create for historic houses with this free family drop-in activity at Harewood.
Join us for a hands-on session where families can explore the strange, beautiful and sometimes troublesome world of fungi. From the mushrooms that thrive in our woodlands to the tiny mould spores that conservation teams work hard to prevent inside the House, this activity invites visitors of all ages to investigate, create and learn together.
What to Expect
During your visit, families can enjoy:
Discovery Tables
Examine real fungi specimens and magnified mould samples, learn how they grow and find out why the Winter months are especially important for protecting historic collections.
Creative Crafts
Make your own fungi-inspired artwork, from spore-print designs to mycelium patterns. Take your creation home as a reminder of your visit.
Is the workshop safe for all ages?
Yes! Although this session explores the weird and wonderful world of mould, there is absolutely no mould growing inside Harewood House. Our Conservation Team are far too good at their jobs for that!
All demonstrations use safe, clean materials, no spores, no smells, no surprises. Just good family fun and a chance to learn how we keep the House in top condition over winter.
Why Fungi & Mould?
Fungi play an essential role in woodland ecosystems, breaking down dead wood and enriching the soil. But inside a historic house, mould, a type of fungus, can pose a serious risk to paintings, books, wallpapers and fabrics.
This session shines a light on the science behind both sides of fungi, helping young visitors understand how Harewood House is carefully cared for throughout the Winter months.
