In the State Rooms
British artist Richard Woods is renowned for his work with garish and repetitious motifs, which he has applied to buildings and interiors across the world. In the range of ‘WrongWoods’ cabinets and ‘Bricks & Mortar’ seating on display on the State Floor at Harewood, he has collaborated with designer Sebastian Wrong to produce a range of furniture for Established & Sons. This contemporary collaboration sits happily in Harewood’s interiors, where art and design have always coexisted, for example in the relationship between Robert Adam’s interiors and Thomas Chippendale’s furniture commissioned for the building of the House in the 1760s.
Wood’s screenprinted ‘logos’ draw inspiration from domestic, often unfashionable, motifs, and here are humorously applied to the furniture designed by Wrong. For example, the irony of the ‘Bricks & Mortar’ design lies in the fact that the ‘hardness’ of the brick print is in contrast to the comfort of the sofa and chairs themselves.
