This room is decorated with hand-painted, 18th century Chinese wallpaper. It creates a single mural around the entire room and depicts idealised scenes of industry in China, specifically the production of rice, tea, silk and porcelain.
The wallpaper was originally hung in one of the guest bedrooms on the first floor of Harewood House (now the Private Apartments).
Although the wallpaper is over 250 years old, it is very well preserved and retains much of its original colouring. This is due to the paper being taken down in the 19th century and put into storage, reducing its exposure to the damaging effects of light and smoke. It was rediscovered in an outbuilding in the 20th century and re-hung in this room in 2008. An extra strip of blue sky was added by conservators to the top of the wallpaper to adjust the paper to the height of the new room, a technique often used by 18th century decorators.
