Take a stroll across the North Front and you will find a one-of-a-kind treehouse tucked away in the enchanting woodland, just waiting to be explored.
Designed and installed by environmentalist Sebastian Cox, Sylvascope was commissioned by Harewood House Trust for Harewood Craft Biennial in 2022
Sylvascope was designed to raise conversations around the importance of sustainable woodland management, and the process of selectively felling trees for timber and in order to promote space for regenerative growth and the establishment of new wildlife habitats.

It was created using timber from felled trees which were selectively thinned from the area of managed woodland, with the surrounding dead hedging and habitat piles built by volunteers and staff from Harewood House Trust.
It has proved an incredibly popular installation with visitors of all ages, and the area is used regularly for outdoor, forest school learning. It’s a playful way to engage children with climate change.

Wood is the single greatest material on earth – it’s strong, it’s light, it’s beautiful, it’s warm to the touch – and it has this amazing property … it’s made of solid carbon dioxide."

What's on in the Sylvascope
From KS1 pupils exploring microhabitats and KS2 pupils building an Anglo-Saxon settlement, to painting workshops inspired by the work of J. M. W. Turner who spent much of his early career here at Harewood, there is always something going on in the Sylvascope.
