A focus on Habitats and Conservation
Using our amazing bird collection and focusing on species including the critically endangered Vietnam Pheasant, Bali Starling and Palm cockatoo, as well as our famous Humboldt penguins, pupils will explore the habitats that these birds live within and the profound impact that humans have had on them. We will explore the link between habit loss and the declining numbers of these birds in the wild and also the conservation programmes that are supporting the survival of these species.
Your pupils will take part in an interactive tour of the Bird Garden, exploring the themes of habitat and conservation through the birds that they meet. This is followed by a practical STEM activity where pupils will make a minibeast hotel which they can take away with them as a focus for further study.

Timings for all sessions are flexible and can be tailored to suit KS1, lower primary or upper primary aged pupils.
The session runs as a carousel of parallel activities by dividing your group in half and switching through activities. Each session is guided by a Learning Facilitator or Bird Keeper offering structured guidance and hands-on facilitation whilst encouraging them to explore for themselves.
Costs: £7 per pupil for a half-day experience.
Please make us aware of any allergens or dietary requirements when completing the booking form as the birds are fed using a variety of seeds, nuts and fruit. These may also be used during the STEM activity.
Alternative activities can be offered if we are made aware in advance of the session.
