Many of the crafts people who made masterpieces in the Harewood collection are unidentified, unknown.

Unknown indigenous crafts people were responsible for wooden objects that came to Harewood from overseas and anonymous furniture makers from Chippendale’s workshop who were responsible for much of the treasures that you see in the house today.

London-based Jan Hendzel is crafting two bold new pieces, a grand monolithic console table and a meticulously hand-carved large-scale wall mirror, in a combination of British timber and reclaimed timber. Both pieces represent Hendzel’s distinct design language of sculptural simplicity, tactile materiality and technical intricacy. Underpinning Hendzel’s project is an acknowledgement of the historic wealth and power of Harewood House, the physical embodiment of the building, collections and exhibited works.

Jan Hendzel’s console table and carved mirror is a celebration of those crafts people, local materials and the carving techniques of artisans from the UK and West Africa.
