Saturday 31 August 2024
2.30pm – 5.30pm

For our final Make It Harewood Weekend, join Create/Elevate Artist Rosa Harradine, and learn first hand how to create beautiful cobweb brooms.

The cobweb broom is the broom you never knew you needed! Perfect for cobwebs in high-up ceiling corners, but also other hard-to-reach places like underneath the dishwasher, behind the fridge or radiator, in between blinds or on top of curtain rails. You will learn how to make one cobweb broom using broomcorn fibre. A selection of wooden broomsticks and a variety of colours of nylon thread will be provided for you to choose from. You will learn how to sort the broomcorn, prepare the wooden broomstick, weave the stalks onto your broom handle and how to stitch the fibres together.

Feedback from previous attendees–

“Liked the small group size, the selection of sticks and colour. Instructions were detailed and easy to follow.”

“It was fun, engaging and coming away with a broom was excellent…”

Useful Information

Please note that broom making is surprisingly physical, so you will need a reasonable amount of dexterity in your hands and feet.

The broomcorn will be soaked before use so it will be damp – you might like to bring a small towel with you to keep your lap dry.

Please bring socks to wear as you will be working with your shoes off.

This workshop is taking place in the Education Suite, which is located upstairs, on the right hand side in the Courtyard.

This workshop is suitable for ages 18+

*Please note this workshop includes entry to Harewood for the day.

About Rosa Harradine

Rosa Harradine makes brushes and brooms out of natural materials including arenga, tampico and broomcorn, and makes pieces that are beautiful as well as useful. Rosa creates in her workshop at the end of her garden in Carmarthenshire. She owns a small patch of land where she harvests wood for broom handles, and her long-term goal is to grow her own fibre for making brooms, as well as plants for natural dyes. Rosa strives to leave a small impact on the earth and this would be the ultimate in her quest for sustainability. Rosa was chosen as a TOAST New Maker 2022 by the fashion and homewares brand who selected five makers demonstrating excellence in skill, originality and craftsmanship. Her work has been featured in publications such as House & Garden and the Sunday Times Style.

Rosa Harradine is part of the Harewood 2024 Biennial Create/Elevate. Her works can be seen as part of the exhibition, which runs from 28 June–20 October.
