For our final Make It Harewood Weekend, join Create/Elevate Artist Rosa Harradine, and learn first how she creates her beautiful brushes, which can be seen on display as part of our Biennial Exhibition.

Rosa will discuss the techniques and history of brush-making and you will learn how to make three different brushes using tampico, arenga and broomcorn fibres. These will be bound with nylon cord and finished with a cotton strap for hanging. You will have the chance to experiment with different colours and come away with three brushes by the end of the session.

Useful Information

Please note that brush making is surprisingly physical, so you will need a reasonable amount of dexterity in your hands and feet.

Please bring socks to wear as you will be working with your shoes off.

This workshop is taking place in the Education Suite, which is located upstairs, on the right hand side in the Courtyard.

This workshop is suitable for ages 18+

About Rosa Harradine

Rosa Harradine makes brushes and brooms out of natural materials including arenga, tampico and broomcorn, and makes pieces that are beautiful as well as useful. Rosa creates in her workshop at the end of her garden in Carmarthenshire. She owns a small patch of land where she harvests wood for broom handles, and her long-term goal is to grow her own fibre for making brooms, as well as plants for natural dyes. Rosa strives to leave a small impact on the earth and this would be the ultimate in her quest for sustainability. Rosa was chosen as a TOAST New Maker 2022 by the fashion and homewares brand who selected five makers demonstrating excellence in skill, originality and craftsmanship. Her work has been featured in publications such as House & Garden and the Sunday Times Style.

Rosa Harradine is part of the Harewood 2024 Biennial Create/Elevate. Her works can be seen as part of the exhibition, which runs from 28 June–20 October.
