Friday 18 – Saturday 26 February 2022
10.15am – 11.45am
In February 2022, we are celebrating 100 years since HRH Princess Mary’s marriage into the Lascelles family. Join us on this special occasion for an exclusive curator-led tour of our exhibition, ‘Becoming the Yorkshire Princess’, finished off with luxury afternoon tea served in the Billiard Room.
We are offering a special opportunity to experience ‘Becoming the Yorkshire Princess’ out-of-hours and to learn more about Princess Mary’s early life through the letters, diaries and personal belongings that she left behind, including a charming family photograph album and a Fabergé necklace pendant. With the exhibition’s curator, you will explore Princess Mary’s roles as a daughter, sister and wife, taking a closer look at some of her most intimate correspondence and ending with a special focus on her wedding day.
The tour will conclude with the rare opportunity to see Princess Mary’s wedding dress, which will be brought out of storage for a private viewing by the group in the Steward’s Room. Made by the fashion house Reville of London, the dress consists of an underdress woven with silver thread, covered by a sheer silk gauze embellished with crystal beads and pearls, and was described at the time by Vogue as a combination of ‘youthful simplicity and Royal splendour’. The dress’ silk train will also be displayed as part of the exhibition, decorated with embroidered flowers representing nations that were once part of the British Empire.
Please arrive promptly at the Front Door of the House for the Tour to start at 10:15.
Followed by a Quintessential Afternoon Tea on the Terrace, weather permitting, or in the Billiard Room.
