Saturday 21 – Sunday 22 June 2025
10.30am – 4.30pm
Join artist Luke Thompson at Harewood for this two day course, exploring all things Turner.
Over the course of the weekend, participants will sketch and study on the location where Turner worked and painted. On Saturday, we will learn how to record and sketch ideas of the landscape ‘en plein air’, working in charcoal and paint to record information out in the open which will then inform a studio painting. Here we will look at design and composition, and how to take inspiration from the natural environment.
On Sunday, we will work from these sketches and references to create our final painting, taking inspiration from Turner’s work. Here we will go in depth into colour mixing and paint application using oils.
A lunch will be provided on both days as well as self-pour refreshments.
Harewood has a number of supplies available but it is essential you bring your own canvas. If you wish to provide your own supplies, the material list can be downloaded on the left hand side of this webpage.
Luke Thompson is a representational painter, working with portraits, the figure, and still life. He works with traditional methods of oil painting and charcoal drawing, and looks to capture the narrative of nature as it is seen and experienced with a focus on light, shadow and form.
A 14 day cancellation policy applies to all workshops. As commercial workshops support our charitable activities, and materials and equipment are ordered in advance, we regret that refunds cannot be offered less than two weeks before the workshop date should you wish to cancel your place.
Should Harewood House Trust need to cancel a workshop, your ticket will be refunded in full.
