Sunday 21 August 2022
9am – 1pm

Join Harewood House and Harewood Holistics for a morning of yoga, pranayama and meditation at the heart of the Harewood Estate.

Harewood’s Himalayan Garden is a haven of beauty and tranquillity. The garden is home to the Harewood Stupa, a Buddhist monument built in 2004 by monks from the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Bhutan is known as the Kingdom of Happiness and is well-known for its philosophy of Gross National Happiness, split into 9 domains including ecological diversity and resilience to measure the collective happiness and well-being of the population. Bhutan is the only carbon neutral country in the world and living harmoniously with nature is central to this inspiring country’s philosophy.

Inspired by our stupa and its spiritual home, this morning retreat offers an opportunity to bring mind, body and breath to a state of harmony whilst also learning how we, here on the Harewood Estate, work in harmony with nature.

Itinerary for the day

What's included?

Refreshments at Arch Barn

Guided walk to the Harewood Stupa and through the Himalayan Gardens
This mindful walk will take you through the Himalayan Garden where you can see blue poppies, orchids, cobra lilies, primulas and over 50 types of rhododendrons. The gardens are a beautiful place to pause and breathe with the sound of the waterfall helping to relax and calm minds.

The Himalayan Stupa was built by monks from Bhutan in 2004 and is the only one of its kind in the UK. Here you will have the opportunity to leave an offering of something you have found along the walk such as a fallen leaf or a flower. This Buddhist tradition helps us to reflect on life’s impermanence and helps to calm the mind.

Guided Pranayama in the Walled Garden

On arrival at the Walled Garden you will begin with reclining relaxation followed by gentle stretches to stretch and release the muscles around the ribcage to prepare us for our Pranayama practice. You will then be guided through a pranayama sequence to leave you energised and with a fuller, deeper breath ready for your postural practice.

Walled Garden Talk + Tour

We will then be met by one of the Gardening Team at Harewood House Trust who will take us on a tour of the garden and talk to us about how he and his team use sustainable practices to work in harmony with nature.

Yoga + Meditation

We will end our morning with mind, breath and body working in complete harmony as we move through a flowing Hatha yoga sequence ending with meditation and deep relaxation. The yoga will include a gentle warm up followed by an energising asana sequence. The teaching will include a balance of precise, alignment-based instruction and flow where poses are linked together into a simple sequence. Modifications and use of props will be offered to ensure poses are accessible for all.

What do I need to bring?

We will be using essential oils, sage and incense during the session.
