Our workshops give children direct experience of our wonderful gardens and plant collections. From hands-on activities in the Walled Garden to den-building, hunting for mini-beasts or following in the footsteps of the Victorian plant hunters in the Himalayan Garden.
Although some workshops include a short indoor activity, we will be mainly outside so dress for the weather!
Enjoy the green expanse and fresh air at Harewood for team challenges and outdoor activities which encourage problem-solving, communication, collaboration and having lots of fun! All based outdoors, children will create shelters using natural materials, use map-reading skills and enjoy competitive team challenges from orienteering to scavenger hunts*. A perfect end of term treat or team-building day for a new class at the start of term!

Learn about our native and non-native woodland, from the different types of trees at Harewood, the seasonal changes they undergo as part of their life-cycle and the different habitats they create for wildlife. The session includes tree identification and measuring as well as games and stories to engage your class.
KS1-2

Learn all about the insects and bugs that go about their business in the trees, soil and undergrowth in our gardens. We’ll identify the different creatures as part of a mini-beast hunt, as well as considering habitats, seasonal changes and life-cycles. In groups we’ll make mini-beast hotels in groups to encourage bug-life.
KS1-2

See a heritage garden in action and get hands-on with how food is grown in our school gardening plot. We’ll be based in the Walled Garden, discovering how vegetables grow and the types of plants we cultivate for food and a healthy diet. Depending on the time of year, there’s always jobs to do in the garden, from sowing seeds to harvesting vegetables or picking fruit, so time to get stuck in!
KS1-3

Become an explorer and develop your understanding of plants and historic plant hunters through scientific enquiry and observation. Explore where in the world different plants originate and how they adapt to their environment. We’ll be going on our own plant hunting expedition in the Himalayan Garden, following in the footsteps of the original Victorian plant hunters to discover the diversity of plants from around the world.
