One of a set of four George III pier glasses by Thomas Chippendale the Younger.
Supplied for £192 in 1797, as part of a set with the matching pier tables, these pier glasses were made for the Gallery. The rectangular frames are mounted with shelves and surmounted by painted medallions and putti holding flowers. The paintings are very much in the style of Angelica Kauffman, with mythological subjects representing four different aspects of love, all in Arcadian settings. Three of which are taken from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
