Louisa, Countess of Harewood

Louisa, Countess of Harewood by George Richmond

Additional Information

Together Louisa and her husband commissioned Sir Charles Barry to provide more accommodation for their thirteen children and ‘modernise’ the house. The alterations changed the appearance of the house especially the addition of the parterre terrace which Louisa is proudly indicating. George Richmond made over 2,500 portraits of eminent Victorians. Painted c1855 at a cost of £325 this was one of the most expensive works he ever painted and it became a popular print. The portrait was presented to the 3rd Earl of Harewood by estate tenants in 1855.
