Lady Canning

This profile portrait of Lady Canning was painted in 1849.  It is by Franz Xaver Winterhaldter, the great 19th century German painter  of European royalty, who was favoured by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He painted 120 portraits in all of the Royal Couple. This portrait is one of a series of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting and was hung at Osborne House, which Lady Canning visited frequently with the Royal Couple. Queen Victoria thought the image was very like but when Charlotte’s sister Louisa, Marshioness of Waterford visited Osborne she notes that it was ‘rather like, but hard’.
