Japanned Night Tables

Date: late 1700s

Location: East Bedroom

Made en suite with the clothes press and commode c1769, the pair of tables are decorated with Chinese scenes and the corner supports are designed to look like bamboo.

Additional Information

Edwin Lascelles commissioned Chippendale to make many pieces of furniture in the ‘Chinese’ style, and this bedroom suite was made to accompany the Chinese wallpaper originally hung by Chippendale’s men in the Chintz bedroom, ┬ánow hung in the East Bedroom. In the 18th century the function of the night table was disguised in various manners, sometimes as a small commode on legs or a miniature cupboard.
