Donkeys are members of the horse family Equidae, and are descended from the African wild ass. Throughout history, donkeys have been known as ‘beasts of burden’, used as working animals for over 5000 years.

Donkeys come in a wide range of colours but are most typically seen as a dull greyish-brown. Their distinctive long ears give them excellent hearing and are also said to cool the donkey’s blood. In the wild, donkeys are used to living spread far apart from one another and their characteristic loud call can be heard for over three kilometres. It is here that their big ears come in to great use, when listening out for a far away neighbour! Visitors to Harewood Farm will be able to see our donkey’s in 2016.
