Our pair of alpacas here at Harewood Farm are of the Huacaya breed, originating from the Altiplano plateau in the Andes. Compared to the Suri breed, these alpacas are more bulky in appearance, with shorter curly hair. Of the 3.7 million alpacas in the world, around 90% are of the Huacaya breed.

Unlike their cousins, the llamas, alpacas were bred specially for their hair, which is often made into wool for weaving. Alpacas can be found in 22 varieties of colour and their wool is sold and used across the world. Alpacas are much smaller than llamas, and consequently are too small to be used as pack animals.
