A focus on lifecycles and classification

Using our amazing bird collection and focussing on species including the Andean condor, owls, Andean flamingos, Illiger’s macaw and Red legged seriema, as well as our famous Humboldt penguins, pupils will explore the life cycles of these birds whilst understanding the different diets that each requires to sustain them and keep them healthy.

Your pupils will take part in an interactive tour of the Bird Garden, exploring the themes of life cycles and food chains through the birds that they meet. This is followed by a practical STEM activity where pupils will plant their own sunflower seed which they can take away with them as a focus for further study.

Key learning objectives include:

Working scientifically to make close observations and to report on findings from enquiries.

Working scientifically to use evidence to answer questions to support findings and to identify differences, similarities or changes related to scientific ideas and processes.

Knowing that animals need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.

Timings + Prices

Timings for all sessions are flexible and can be tailored to suit KS1, lower primary or upper primary aged pupils.

The session runs as a carousel of parallel activities by dividing your group in half and switching through activities. Each session is led by a Learning Facilitator or Bird Keeper offering structured guidance and hands-on facilitation whilst encouraging them to explore for themselves.

Costs: £7 per pupil for a half-day experience.

Allergen warning

Please make us aware of any allergens or dietary requirements when completing the booking form as the birds are fed using a variety of seeds, nuts and fruit. These may also be used during the STEM activity.

Alternative activities can be offered if we are made aware in advance of the session.
