‘Art at Harewood’ is our ongoing programme of temporary exhibitions, which take place throughout the House and grounds, including the State Floor and Terrace Gallery, during each season.
Harewood has enjoyed a very special relationship with contemporary artists throughout its history. JMW Turner came to Harewood as a young artist aged just 22 and left a legacy of majestic watercolours which remain in the collection today. Other well-known artists historically associated with the House include watercolourists Thomas Girtin, John Varley and John Piper, and photographer Roger Fenton.
Drawing on these rich historic associations as inspiration, we continue that tradition today with a programme of temporary exhibitions throughout the season, taking place in the Terrace Gallery, in the State Rooms and occasionally in the grounds including the Terrace, West Garden and Harewood Church.
Twenty years ago the Terrace Gallery was founded in what was the original sub-hall of Harewood House, becoming at the time the first and only contemporary exhibition space within an ‘English country house’ setting. For two decades the space has been a platform for some of the most exciting and challenging contemporary artists of our time, showing works across all artforms and often in response to, or juxtaposed with, Harewood’s historic collections.
Artists who have participated in the exhibitions programme since 1989 include Bill Viola, Mark Wallinger, Anya Gallaccio, Andy Goldsworthy and Laura Ford. In 2010 we look forward to celebrating 250 years of innovation as well as the Terrace Gallery’s 21st birthday with you, and to launching an online archive of our past exhibitions.
